When Ryan J. Guay graduated from Oak Hill High School in Wales, Maine in 2002, he was sure he wanted to go to college to learn the media and recording industries, hoping to someday use his love of music (he was a drummer), and work in the recording industry. Ryan attended the New England School of Music in Bangor, Maine for a full year.

Ryan Guay, Sept. 2005

It was during the summer after that first year of college that Ryan decided the recording industry was not for him. He had a friend attending MMI in Orlando and Ryan decided to give that a try. He loaded up his pick-up truck with his four-wheeler in the back and his mattress strapped on top of it. Ryan always had a passion for motor sports, and he had fixed up his pick-up truck with a lowering kit, air bags for suspension, painted bright orange and green, etc. As his mom recalls, it was quite a site seeing that truck piled high with his belongings -- he drove from Maine to Florida like that!

Ryan had always owned dirt bikes while growing up, and while attending MMI in 2005, he purchased a Harley Davidson. After the accident that ended Ryan’s life, the family purchased the Harley from the insurance company and Ryan’s two brothers, Greg and Tom, are re-building it to the custom chopper Ryan would have liked. And each January since 2007, the family has held a fundraiser featuring Ryan's brothers Greg, a talented classical guitarist and instructor from South Carolina, and Tom, a bass guitarist from Maine, to raise money for this scholarship in Ryan’s memory.

Objective:

As a young adult pursuing his dream to become a certified technician, Ryan found his passion – mechanics. In 2005, Ryan started school at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Orlando, FL, and later was on the Dean’s list with a 4.0 GPA. Tragically in January 2006, at the age of 22, he was struck and killed while riding his motorcycle to work. This $1,000 tuition grant-in-aid was established by Ryan’s family to help a student from Maine pursue their educational goal of becoming an automotive or motorcycle mechanic. It is hoped that Ryan’s memory, his generosity and his passion for motorsports will be kept alive through this annual scholarship award.
